Loving What I Do October 18, 2006

Yesterday I had a great experience. The University of Minnesota School of Nursing Foundation invited me to do the Printy lecture, a funded annual event for the past 15 years. My talk was titled “Back to the Future.” The auditorium was nearly full — .over 100 nurses and a few visitors. The talk went well and the questions afterwards were good. What was especially rewarding for me was the cross section of my life represented there: from nurses I taught, to nurses I worked with, to nurses with whom at some time or another I plotted and planned and schemed with to improve patient care.

I just love being where I am. Semi-retired meaning I have time to do things I couldn’t do when I was running CHCM. Acknowledging my 50th year in the profession, and feeling good, really good about that. Loving history and having an opportunity to work on nursing history for the School of Nursing. Having access to information and the latest thinking about the future of health care — both the good and the bad of it. Being able to reflect on the past and project into the future. And being able to think about what it all means and to share those thoughts with others.

It just doesn’t get much better than that. Except to also be attached to a progressive School of Nursing that I believe is reigniting the Spirit of Inquiry and Research through a transformation process that is improving the culture of the school for both students and faculty.

John Nelson, Beth Beaty and I are planning to create a special section of our webpage for Primary Nursing. Interest has ebbed and flowed over the years, and seems to be building again as frustration with FRED (Frantically Running Every Day) continues to negatively impact nursing values and unit morale. We are envisioning an opportunity for people to share problems and solutions as well as a resource for articles and research. Let me know if you have any advice for our construction of this new site.

Had dinner last night with Jayne Felgen, the President of Creative Health Care Management. It is always so good to touch base with her. We are both into such interesting aspects of our work there is barely time to catch up with family and personal stuff.

She has just returned from England where a group of dynamic individuals from eight countries are designing a research project about patient satisfaction in the context of a therapeutic relationship with a patient and nurse autonomy. These incredible individuals have been meeting in various places around the world as a result of a chance meeting on the deck of my house at a Sunday morning brunch during the last Summit of Sages in October 2004.

Which reminds me: watch for info on the next Summit  of Sages, October 14 – 16, 2007. Details are still being planned but we know the topic will be “Social justice as a core value of nursing” and the keynote speaker is Maya Angelou! It doesn’t get much better than that!
